How to Make the Most of an Open House

An open house is a low-pressure way to see a home in person. A little preparation helps you learn more in less time.

Before you go

  • Write down your top three must-haves
  • Review the listing photos and floor plan
  • Plan your route if you’re visiting more than one home

While you’re there

  • Check the layout, storage, natural light, and condition of major systems
  • Open cabinets and closets, and look for signs of water damage
  • Step outside to see the yard, parking, and surroundings
  • Take photos and short notes for each home so they don’t blur together

Questions worth asking

Ask the listing agent how long the home has been on the market, whether the seller has a preferred timeline, and what the monthly costs look like, such as HOA dues if they apply.
